Growth factors are released by mechanically wounded endothelial cells

Growth factors may be required at sites of mechanical injury and normal wear and tear in vivo, suggesting that the direct action of mechanical forces on cells could lead to growth factor release. Scraping of cells from the tissue culture substratum at 37 degrees C was used to test this possibility. We show that scraping closely mimics in vitro both the transient plasma membrane wounds observed ...

Multiple splicing factors are released from endogenous complexes during in vitro pre-mRNA splicing.

Pre-mRNA splicing occurs in a macromolecular complex called the spliceosome. Efforts to isolate spliceosomes from in vitro splicing reactions have been hampered by the presence of endogenous complexes that copurify with de novo spliceosomes formed on added pre-mRNA. We have found that removal of these large complexes from nuclear extracts prevents the splicing of exogenously added pre-mRNA. We ...

Are Impact Factors corrupting truth and utility in biomedical research?

What motivates governments to spend taxpayer money on iomedical research? A pragmatic answer would be to improve uman/animal health and to support biotech/pharma. Clearly, he research output from such expenditures should be both true repeatable, robust, reliable) and useful (helpful, applicable, growng knowledge). Most biomedical research funding is competitively warded as twoto five-year grant...

Are Scientists Nearsighted Gamblers? The Misleading Nature of Impact Factors

Despite a “Cambrian” explosion in the number of citation metrics used (Van Noorden, 2010), the impact factor (IF) of a journal remains a decisive factor of choice when publishing your ultimate research results and evaluating research productivity. Most other citation metrics correlate with the IF and there is little doubt that they reflect the overall impact of different journals. However, ther...

Floods on Mars Released from Groundwater by Impact

On Earth, large earthquakes commonly cause saturated soils to liquefy and streamflow to increase. We suggest that meteoritic impacts on Mars may have repeatedly caused similar liquefaction to enable violent eruption of groundwater. The amount of erupted water may be comparable to that required to produce catastrophic floods and to form outflow channels.  2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
